Volatility on Stock Details: IV, IVR, Skew & Max Pain
How to read IV/IVR history, call vs put skew (Put rich / Call rich), and open-interest max pain on a ticker’s Volatility tab.
What it is
Volatility is a left-nav tab on each ticker’s Stock Details page (/stock/aapl/volatility). It shows four panels:
- IV — ATM implied volatility history (1M / 3M / 1Y)
- IV Rank — where today’s IV sits in its 52-week range (0–100)
- Volatility Skew — call vs put IV by strike for one expiry, with a Put rich / Call rich / Even skew readout
- Max Pain — open interest by strike (calls up, puts down) with spot and max-pain markers
How to open it
- Click any ticker to open Stock Details.
- Choose Volatility (IV, IVR, Skew) in the left panel (or go to
/stock/SYMBOL/volatility).
Access
Full IV / IVR / skew / max pain charts unlock with Ultra. Guests see a blurred chart preview and a sign-up wall; signed-in non-Ultra plans see an upgrade CTA over the same preview.
How to use skew for the wheel
- Put rich — OTM puts are priced with higher IV than OTM calls → often a good time to sell CSP.
- Call rich — upside is priced richer → often a good time to sell CC.
- Even skew — no clear CSP vs CC edge; compare premium at your target delta.
Pick an expiry in the skew dropdown (labels show DTE). Use Near spot to zoom the strike window, or Calls / Puts to isolate one side.
IV vs IV Rank
The two history charts often look similar: IV Rank is IV rescaled into the current 52-week high/low band. Use IV for the absolute level and IV Rank for “cheap vs expensive vs this stock’s own year.”
Max pain
Toggle Weekly / Monthly when both ladders exist. Green bars are call OI, red bars put OI. Spot and max-pain lines help you see if price is near a pin.
Next steps
- Screen CSPs or CCs in the Cash-Secured Put Screener or Covered Call Screener.
- Cross-check dealer positioning with GEX on the same Stock Details page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Volatility on Stock Details?
Open any ticker’s Stock Details page, then choose Volatility (IV, IVR, Skew) in the left panel — or go to /stock/SYMBOL/volatility.
Do I need Ultra for Volatility?
Yes. Full IV, IV Rank, skew, and max pain charts unlock with Ultra. Guests can sign up from the blurred preview; other plans see an upgrade CTA on the same tab.
What does Put rich / Call rich mean?
Put rich means average OTM put IV is higher than OTM call IV (often favor selling CSP). Call rich means the opposite (often favor selling CC). Even skew means no clear edge.
Why do IV and IV Rank charts look alike?
IV Rank maps the same IV history into a 0–100 scale using the stock’s 52-week IV high and low, so the shape can match while the Y-axis meaning differs.
Can I change the skew expiration?
Yes. Use the expiry dropdown on Volatility Skew — each option shows the date and DTE. Changing expiry refreshes only the skew chart.
