Earnings Safe Preset: Best Default for New Wheel Traders
The Earnings Safe preset combines all our beginner-friendly defaults — earnings excluded, sensible delta, deep liquidity, decent yield. Our most-recommended starter.
What this preset does
The Earnings Safe preset bundles every beginner-friendly default:
- Exclude Earnings = on (no earnings inside DTE)
- Delta in safe wheel range
- Liquidity Cleanup on
- Reasonable Volume floor
- Standard wheel DTE
- Decent yield floor
It's our single most-recommended preset for new users. If you only ever use one preset, use this one.
When to use it
- You're new to the wheel.
- You want sleep-at-night income.
- You're building a default screen that you'll save and reuse.
A worked example — Sunday-night wheel session
- Open the Put screener.
- Apply Earnings Safe Put preset.
- Filter by your watchlist tickers.
- Sort by Rating descending.
- Pick 3–5 contracts across different sectors.
- Place limit orders at mid; review on Monday morning.
Repeat each Sunday. That's a complete wheel income system.
How to tweak it
The preset is a sane starting point. Common safe tweaks:
- Tighten Yield to ≥ 1% if you want richer premium.
- Tighten Delta to −0.25 to −0.20 for higher win rate.
- Add ETF Only for ultra-conservative income.
Why earnings exclusion is the magic
The single biggest cause of wheel losses for beginners is letting an earnings event hit a 30-DTE position. By baking that exclusion into the default, this preset removes the most common landmine without you having to think about it.
Where to go next
- Read Exclude Earnings filter for the mechanic.
- Compare with Conservative Wheel preset (similar + moneyness).
- Save your tweaked version using the Save Screener button.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Earnings Safe preset really safe?
It's the safest single-click screen on the platform — but no preset is risk-free. You still need to read the underlying ticker, size positions appropriately, and manage assignments. Earnings exclusion removes the single biggest binary risk.
